Conserving ecological functions of frog communities in Borneo requires diverse forest landscapes

چکیده
Recent studies suggest that differences in species composition across habitat types lead to increased multifunctionality on the regional scale. However, data about turnover—and especially complementarity functional composition—across neighbouring from natural communities are rare. We studied frog lowland rainforest Malaysian Borneo and compared functional-trait of different (alluvial forest, limestone kerangas). Forest differed strongly their and, a lesser extent, composition. also combinations frogs directly forest identified six clusters functionally similar species: three were found all types, others absent at least one type. The between resulted high gamma diversity, most this diversity was unique individual types. Moreover, strict separation suggests even cannot easily replace each other case local extinctions. maintenance ecological functions fulfilled by landscape scale therefore requires conservation forest-specific communities.

Habitat Re-Creation (Ecological Restoration) as a Strategy for Conserving Insect Communities in Highly Fragmented Landscapes
Because of their vast diversity, measured by both numbers of species as well as life history traits, insects defy comprehensive conservation planning. Thus, almost all insect conservation efforts target individual species. However, serious insect conservation requires goals that are set at the faunal level and conservation success requires strategies that conserve intact communities. This task ...

متن کاملConserving old-growth forest diversity in disturbance-prone landscapes.
A decade after its creation, the Northwest Forest Plan is contributing to the conservation of old-growth forests on federal land. However the success and outlook for the plan are questionable in the dry provinces, where losses of old growth to wildfire have been relatively high and risks of further loss remain. We summarize the state of knowledge of old-growth forests in the plan area, identify...
متن کاملConserving biodiversity in production landscapes.
Alternative land uses make different contributions to the conservation of biodiversity and have different implementation and management costs. Conservation planning analyses to date have generally assumed that land is either protected or unprotected, and that the unprotected portion does not contribute to conservation goals. We develop and apply a new planning approach that explicitly accounts ...
متن کاملVariegated tropical landscapes conserve diverse dung beetle communities
BACKGROUND Conserving biodiversity in tropical landscapes is a major challenge to scientists and conservationists. Current rates of deforestation, fragmentation, and land use intensification are producing variegated landscapes with undetermined values for the conservation of biological communities and ecosystem functioning. Here, we investigate the importance of tropical variegated landscapes t...
